We prioritise sustainability to ensure our operations are conducted responsibly

We are dedicated to being at the forefront of sustainable mining practices, working closely with our clients to deliver sustainable outcomes.

Health & Safety

Our vision for Safety is Home Safe. Home Safe is about our people, it’s not about processes or regulation or statistics.

HomeSafe is BUMA’s dedicated safety system that places our employees and our site visitors well-being at the forefront. HomeSafe goes beyond protocols; it’s a commitment to a safer, healthier work environment. The fundamental principles of HomeSafe are:

First and Always Be Safe: Prioritise safety in every task.
Embrace the Rules: Guidelines are in place to protect us – let’s wholeheartedly embrace them.
Care for Each Other: We’re a team; look out for one another.
Take Safety Personally: It’s not just a requirement; it’s a personal commitment.
Our Attitude Makes Us: Cultivate a positive safety culture as part of our identity.
Discipline and Consistency: Consistently follow safety practices for a secure workplace.

HomeSafe is more than a program; it’s a mindset and a commitment to a safer work environment. Together, we create a secure space for all.

Engineer

Our people make us who we are

We believe our people are our greatest strength and we are dedicated to investing in individual development and providing recognition and encouragement. We are committed to developing a workforce comprising motivated employees from the widest pool of talent available and to actively recruiting and developing employees from within the regions we work. BUMA Australia works to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace that facilitates opportunity and respect for all our employees.

The culture and performance of a successful mining service provider begins with shared values, and this must be demonstrated by the leadership, especially on our sites. Our corporate teams provide support to the projects and employees from this team rotate through the sites to ensure they understand and appreciate the challenges faced.

Sustainability

Our commitment to First Nations people is in our vision for the future

Engagement with First Nations Australians is a valued part of BUMA Australia’s employment approach, and we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace that facilitates respect and opportunities for individual development. Our focus on cultural inclusiveness is active and ongoing and we are continually working to build our organisational culture through positive leadership with a focus on enhancing workforce diversity.

We are ever evolving our practices to better
help our environment

The sustainability of the Australian resources sector relies on the efficient planning, management and operation of mining activities. As specialist operators of mines, contract mining service providers have an important role to play in the future sustainable development of the Australian mining industry. As one of Australia’s leading contract mining service providers, our environmental strategy is progressive, adaptive and responsive, with a strong focus on continually improving our management systems and performance.

Our well-established systems and processes cover each phase of a mining operation: from start-up through to operations, and eventually closure. Central to upholding our systems and processes is our ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System. All sites have Environmental Management Plans in place to ensure we meet compliance requirements and our environmental targets and objectives.

Our environmental processes and systems focus on the areas in which we have the greatest potential to make a difference, such as reducing greenhouse gases, reducing energy emissions, minimising water use, minimising waste and responsibly managing the land on which we conduct our activities. We also work to minimise disruptions to the surrounding communities, neighbours and other stakeholders.

Climate

Dedicated to global initiatives, we promote energy efficiency and emissions reduction for a sustainable, low-carbon future.

procurement

Sustainable procurement is important to us

Sustainable procurement involves spending money efficiently, economically and ethically to deliver value for money on a whole of life basis. Sustainable procurement extends the assessment of value for money beyond the sourcing process, considering benefits and risks to the organisation, the community, the economy, and impacts on the environment.

BUMA Australia is committed to using its buying power to generate social value resulting in a significantly positive impact on the community and local economy through the use of local goods, services, and labour wherever possible. We understand the importance of supporting the local economy and promoting sustainable development in the regions where we operate.

We believe that engaging with the local community in this way not only benefits the community but also contributes to the success of our operations. Local vendors and suppliers have a greater understanding of the local context and are often better positioned to provide timely and effective support than those located further afield. By helping to build a diverse supply chain, BUMA’s procurement capability can support businesses of all types to grow and encourage economic and social development while ensuring a sustainable future.

While BUMA Australia prioritises the utilisation of local goods, services, and labour providers whenever possible, we also hold a responsibility to safeguard the success and sustainability of our operations. Our national agreements with tier 1 vendors are carefully considered and selected to meet our operational requirements while upholding our values and standards.

We support our communities however we can

BUMA Australia is committed to supporting the success of the communities where we operate by fostering and maintaining enduring relationships built upon trust. Our aim is to identify and tailor areas for investment and social benefits within the community that contribute to sustainable and positive lifestyle outcomes while respecting the diversity of the local community.

  • BUMA Blackwater Supports Tiny Tots!

At BUMA Blackwater, we’re dedicated to supporting our local communities.

We are committed to making a positive impact where it’s needed most.

BUMA Australia has recently made a generous donation to the Blackwater Tiny Tots centre, which will be used to support the education of children in the Blackwater region.

The Blackwater Tiny Tots Centre Inc is a local, not-for-profit, community-based kindergarten service that caters to industry and Indigenous families in the area. They play a vital role in our community, and it’s worth noting that they are one of the last three services in town still in operation. If Tiny Tots were to close, it would impact an additional 50 families.

Our donation will directly contribute to the education and development of children in the Blackwater region through the Tiny Tots centre. This funding will enable the centre to continue providing valuable educational services and support to the children, ensuring they have access to quality learning opportunities.

  • Police Citizens Youth Club (P.C.Y.C)

Since 2016 BUMA Blackwater have proudly supported our local Police Citizens Youth Club (P.C.Y.C) with financial assistance to help run Youth programs to our local community.

These Youth programs are committed to addressing the whole of community needs, positively impacting young people’s lives and encouraging social cohesion through inclusive programs.

This year, BUMA Blackwater is proudly sponsoring the Braking the Cycle Program (BTC).

Braking the Cycle gives our young people the ability to drive, legally and safely on the road to accumulate their 100 log book hours alongside a dedicated volunteer to help mentor good driving habits. This program improves employability and opportunities for young people as lack of transport is a major barrier to obtaining employment in Central Queensland.

BUMA Blackwater’s investment in Braking the Cycle is an investment in each young participant and their future.

  • Millmerran

BUMA has recently shown its support for two local community initiatives in Millmerran.

During November, Commodore Mine supported the local community by donating a $500 bursary award to a local Year 10 Millmerran High School student. This award is intended for the student who achieves the best marks in Year 10 before transitioning to their new high school.

In addition, Millmerran has been without a pool for the last two years due to ongoing repairs. Unfortunately, the local swimming club’s equipment didn’t hold up well during this period. BUMA is excited to announce a donation of $2,000.00 to the local swimming club, aiming to help them get back into the water.

  • Blackbutt Show Society

On 20th May 2023, Roy Tindale represented BUMA at the Blackbutt Show to present a defibrillator and trauma first aid kit BUMA donated to the Blackbutt Agricultural Show Society.

This defibrillator and first aid kit will be kept in a location that is easy assessable to the local community when required.

We are committed to remaining a visible and active partner in promoting health and wellness in our communities.

  • Man Up!

Donation to Man Up! supporting a QLD charity:
Jill & Leah from Man Up! attended our office to chat about prostate cancer with our Brisbane team in May, the session was informative and well received.

Man Up! was established in 2010 by Brian and Jill Costello after Brian was diagnosed with prostate cancer and they had difficulty finding relevant information and support. Their goal is to educate men and their families, provide information and support and ultimately save lives.

BUMA believes helping raise awareness of prostate cancer is essential and have made a generous donation to this charity of $10 per employee – totalling over $13,000! we will continue to work with Man Up! to roll out a program across our sites during 2024.
