In April 2022, BUMA Australia was awarded a 4-year contract to produce 4.8Mt of ROM coal at the Broadmeadow East (BME) Coal project.

In April 2022, BUMA Australia secured a 4‑year contract to deliver 4.8Mt of ROM coal at the Broadmeadow East (BME) Coal Project—the first stage in the larger Burton Lenton Complex expansion.

Located 25 km south of the Burton Mining Complex, the project demanded an accelerated development program, including establishing heavy‑equipment access, mobilisation pads, temporary facilities and full Drill and Blast capability. BUMA Australia executed a rapid, disciplined mobilisation, building the site from the ground up and standing up a complete operating fleet and team in record time.

The result: first coal achieved in July 2022, just three months after contract award; demonstrating BUMA Australia’s capacity to deliver safe, fast and high‑performance project ramp‑ups.

BUMA Australia provided full mining services at the Broadmeadow project. This included:

  • Statutory management of mining operations
  • Establishment of access and MIA facilities
  • Civil works such as the construction of drains, levees, dams, and an explosive facility
  • Comprehensive mine planning with full technical and survey services
  • Clearing, grubbing, and topsoil removal
  • Drill and blast operations
  • Loading and hauling of both coal and waste materials
  • Selective coal product crushing
  • Train load-out dozing operations
  • Dump management
  • Progressive rehabilitation

Coal production was initially processed through neighbouring mine Carborough Downs CHPP under a coal washing and infrastructure sharing arrangement with Fitzroy Australia. Processing transitioned through the nearby Burton CHPP, post-refurbishment.

Opencut mining paused at Broadmeadow East in May 2024 due to the close proximity (300m standoff) to a powerline traversing the Mine.
