Completed Project
Commodore
Located beside the Millmerran Power Station, the Commodore Mine is the sole supplier of its coal fuel requirements. From 2022 to August 2024, BUMA Australia delivered comprehensive mine services for Millmerran Power Partners, leveraging more than two decades of operational experience at the site gained under Roche and later Downer since 2001. Over 23 years, our team consistently delivered an average of 3.6 million tonnes of raw coal per year, demonstrating our long‑term reliability, operational excellence and capacity to support critical energy infrastructure.

Located adjacent to the Millmerran Power Station, the Commodore Mine serves as the power station’s exclusive source of coal fuel supply. The BUMA team provided total mine services to Millmerran Power Partners from 2022 until the conclusion of the contract in August 2024, building upon the extensive experience gained from previous operations under Roche and later as Downer, dating back to September 2001. Over this 23-year period, an average of 3.6 million tonnes of raw coal was delivered annually to the power station.

Our responsibilities included the operation and management of the mine, along with associated activities such as mine planning and design expertise, drill and blast services, overburden stripping, coal mining and rehabilitation. Additionally, we held statutory responsibility for the mine site, ensuring compliance with the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act and Regulations.

The Commodore project employed around 140 employees across the site, including staff, mine operations, and equipment maintenance personnel. The majority of the workforce was employed from the local community.
By the end of the contract, the mine was left in excellent condition for the next operator, with an in-pit coal inventory of 406 kt, RoM inventory of 110 kt, and a product stockpile of 80 kt—enough coal to run the station for 60 days.

Key Achievements
Back Creek Diversion
We proudly constructed a 6.5 km creek diversion on top of mined-out pits, featuring clay-lined high and low flow channels to prevent leakage. This project not only enhanced environmental sustainability but also allowed access to previously inaccessible coal reserves.
Progressive rehabilitation
Over the past two decades, we have rehabilitated and progressively maintained 1,000 hectares of mined areas. This included land-forming, topsoiling, seeding, and comprehensive water management, such as flood levee construction, MAW and clean water dams, and site drainage works.
